Who would have thought a simple dessert made from ice shavings, some beans, sweet potatoes with a pinch of pearl jellies would’ve made such an impression on me? For the benefit of those who don’t know me, I am not exactly a fan of desserts. Especially not those bubbly, pearly Taiwanese fad that swept across our shores some time ago. I wouldn’t be caught dead sucking black pearly stuffs on those gigantic straws. Nope, not me !

Then one day, I came across Snowflake.

Not the one in Subang or Pavillion but right here in Kota Damansara. My turf. My dining playground. Yup, Snowflake came bashing into Dataran Sunway unannounced, and conquered us all. With their little pearl jellies…. I can imagine them blowpiping us all with pearl jellies using their gigantic straws. Ugh!

Anyway, it was by chance that I stumbled upon this so-called dessert shop. It’s a corner shop and I must compliment the owner of Snowflake for being smart enough to place their store in one of the busiest street in Dataran Sunway. Some of my favorite shops are located on that street. My favorite coffee shop, DU Cafe that serves like a million choices of food ….. and my favorite dvd shop that I “ALWAYS” frequent after my dinner. And guess what, now I have a third option ….. dessert time!

My first visit to Snowflake isn’t exactly a pleasant one. And I blame it on my own biased judgments. As I said earlier, I don’t fancy dessert. Especially not one in an overcrowded shop. The queues were just outrageous. I’ve never seen people so eager to queue up just for a simple dessert such as this. Nevertheless … after some convincing from my partner, I joined the queue (my feeling at that very moment …. I felt a little “over-aged” just to be in that queue … they should come up with another queue for those over 18! Guys and girls … no pun intended. You guys do look young ….)

After queuing for almost like a million years (ok, I was being a little drama .. I waited for about 5 minutes), it was my turn to order. I stared at the sweet young thing behind the counter and she stared back at me, smiling. I looked around and looked up at the menu behind her.

Paiseh. I didn’t know what to do! Good thing the girl behind the counter was nice enough to walk me through the process of ordering. Trust me, if you’re as ignorant as me, you’ll need this.

Step One : Choose Snowflake, Tohua or Memorable series.
Step Two : Select a sub-series choice.
For Snowflake series, select your Snowflake flavor. Grass Jelly series, Taro Ball series or Soya Ice series.
Step Three : Pay up and receive UFO remote token (note : never place the token in your pants pocket!)
Step Four : Choose either to wait for your order outside the shop or in one corner of the shop looking like a school kid punished for being late to class.
Step Five : Your token vibrates. You can collect your order at the delivery counter. (note : if your token is in your pants pocket, you will probably get a shock and embarrass yourself in front of the kids. Serves you right …should’ve listened to me….)

It was after my first visit did I develop a crave for that icy cold, refreshing Snowflake. The next day, I could still vividly remember the taste of Snowflake’s soya ice series with red bean and peanuts. And the same evening … I was queuing up again ….. damn !

You have to try this out, if you haven’t done so. If you like it … good luck, you’ll want more. If not, at least you’ve tried it and you can leave it as a conversation piece with your friends if someone talks about it.

Snowflake is available at these locations :

Pavillion Kuala Lumpur
SS15 Subang Jaya
Kota Damansara

Dataran Sunway in Kota Damansara has never been short on eateries. From Western to Japanese and from Indian to Chinese, Dataran Sunway has it all. There’s even a ‘Kong Chow’ restaurant if you fancy some local dialect food! And if you don’t know where Dataran Sunway is … simple. Just head towards The Curve and drive past it. Soon you will see Dataran Sunway on your right.

And right next to Dataran Sunway is the latest commercial development, The Strand. Yup, spells exactly like the one in London! With The Strand almost as big if not bigger than Dataran Sunway, you can bet on more eateries opening up in this area.

I do have a few articles on Dataran Sunway but allow me to begin with Claypot Station Restaurant. If you’re into claypot dishes, make sure you don’t miss this very humbly set-up place. The setup in this place is pretty simple and plain but don’t let that deceive you. That’s probably the only plain thing about this place. When you check out the menu, you will be surprised by the wide variety to claypot dishes they offer.

This isn’t my first visit to this outlet but the 3rd. And after the 3rd visit, I can safely recommend what’s good and what’s not with them. Which is exactly what I am about to tell you.

If you do decide to visit this place, here are some of my suggestions in no particular order .. but please, I will not be held accountable for your dining experiences.

1. Kung Po Frog
2. Ginger Prawn
3. Tofu
4. Fa Tiu Chicken
5. Vinegar Pork Trottle

I tried their Fa Tiu Pork the last round … and it wasn’t so ‘happening’. Same goes with the Drunken Prawn. guess the only thing that was drunken is probably my appetite.

Anyway, that’s my 2 cents worth on Claypot Station Restaurant and like I said, my opinion will always remain mine until proven otherwise. SO less reading and more action. Go check it out!

Other’s opinion : LS-Lushia

I googled for the word “Pan Mee” and see what the result showed? A whopping 1.7 million returns. Talk about being everyone’s favorite! Anyway, as you can see from the result of the search, Restoran Kin Kin in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in KL seemed to be sitting right at the top. But is it the best place for Pan Mee? Well, I can’t tell because I have not personally tried it.

On the other hand, what I CAN tell you is this one below…..

I have been to this one many, many times … simply because it’s near where I live. That’s right …. Dataran Sunway in Kota Damansara. Food is plentiful here, lucky me. And as for you foodies out there, if you haven’t been to Dataran Sunway … it’s about time you do so.

Restoran Super Kitchen, or Chilly Pan Mee serves 3 different types of Pan Mee. The more popular one would be the Chilly Pan Mee, and there’s the Curry Pan Mee and finally the Pan Mee Soup. And my favorite is of course the Chilly Pan Mee. I usually follow my 4-steps procedure when consuming my bowl of Chilly Pan Mee. Failing to adhere to the steps may result in swollen lips or rumbly tummy.

Anyway, if you’re looking to ‘spice up’ your life, Chilly Pan Mee is where you want to be. And the damage? A mere RM5.50 a bowl.

I tried googling for the best Hainanese Chicken Rice shop in Malaysia and I had 2,440 results. I don’t know about you but the result probably says chicken rice is one of the most common meal around. Don’t quote me but try looking for a decent coffee shop or “kopitiam” that doesn’t sell chicken rice?

I am not saying Kar Heong sells the best chicken rice in town ….. nope, because I am sure there are better ones. But let’s just say they are decently good, and if you happen to be within the vicinity of Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara AND you’re craving for chicken rice … do check them out.

So what’s good in Kar Heong. Hmmm … I would have to say ….. chicken rice. Served with bean sprouts or more popularly known locally as “tau-geh”. Then you might want to order the Roasted Pork, or locally known as “Siu Yuk”. Well, I like my Siu Yuk to be crispy and they happen to serve it the way I like it. Yummy !

On the other hand, the BBQ Pork or Char Siu … isn’t that ‘happening’. How ‘unhappening’ you say? Well, all I can say is …. there’s A LOT more room for improvement … if you get my drift

So that’s pretty much all there is in a wholesome 4 course chicken rice meal.

Generally, I would give Kar Heong a 5 out of 10 which is pretty alright. That’s just me. So you might want to check it out and rate them yourself. And don’t worry about the price, it’s affordable ….

So why not? Take a culinary challenge. From me.
