Seri Kembangan is never short of ‘interesting’ dine options. For example …

1. Ikan Bakar Garam (Salted BBQ Fish) – Behind the hokkien association
2. Weng Heong BBQ Chicken/Duck/Pork Rice shop – just after Public Bank
3. Farmland Porridge Steamboat – Opposite South City Plaza
4. Leong Ya Yong Tau Fu/Ji Bao Gai – Opposite Serdang KTM
5. Sister Lam Yong Tau Fu – On the way to Serdang town from Equine Park
6. Hakka Yong Tau Fu near market
7. Cheng Fatt Restaurant
8. Chinese restaurant (uses charcoal to cook noodles, opposite Cheng Fatt)
9. Hoi Tong BBQ Steamboat Restaurant @ Bukit Serdang
10. Hakka Village Restaurant @ Bukit Serdang
11. K.C.W Curry Fish Head @ Serdang Raya (same row with no.12′s Pan Mee)
12. Pan Mee (night only) @ Serdang Raya – in front of a car repair shop
13. Ye Ren Bak Kut Teh + Steamed Ikan Haruan + Spicy Chicken + Siong Tong La la
14. Yap Beng Dry Bak Kut Teh + Stir Fried Shark @ Equine Park
15. Tomyam Noodles (tue, thurs and sat only) @ Beside soft drink factory, opposite Public Bank there

But before you start making lunch and dinner plans, here’s one to get the ball rolling. Kien Kee Sup Pedas Ayam Kampung (or direct translation would sound like “Kien Kee Village Chicken Spicy Soup”) is located behind the Post Office in Seri Kembangan.

The places opens every morning at 9:30am, closes at 3:00pm and opens again in the evening from 6:00pm till 9:00pm. So if you’re up for breakfast, lunch or dinner … they’ll be more than happy to have you. So what’s the specialty in this place?

Try their Sup Pedas (Hot soup or lat thong).

Also known as lat thong (hot soup) in Chinese, this clear soup gets its distinct warming and spicy taste from the use of crushed black peppercorns. The soup is spicy enough to tingle your senses but not burn your mouth. The soup is also sweet tasting from the use of an assortment of pork meat, stomach and intestines. The owner claims it is useful in alleviating coughs.

Next, also try their “Fa Tiu” Chicken. Served in a claypot, the tender chicken pieces are coated with a thick and slightly sweet soy sauce, which goes well with a bowl of white rice. The addition of “Fa Tiu” wine just before serving adds an alluring aroma to the dish.

With that much meat consumed, one must strike a balance. Thus … don’t forget to forget to order some vegetable dishes, albeit a simple one. Like the one I had below ….

And here’s how you get there. If you have your GPS, check coordinate : N 3 1.332 E 101 42.29099 .

Tucked in the far corner of Kuala Lumpur, there’s a place known as Segambut. I looked it up on Google and found that Segambut actually covers a much bigger area. Did you you know that from the high-end condominiums of Mont Kiara and Sri Kiara to the middle-class areas of Taman Sri Segambut and Bandar Manjalara, and the rural areas of Segambut Dalam and Kampung Sungai Penchala are all under the Segambut constituency? I was like … wow, I never knew. So much for my geographical and political knowledge.

ANYWAY, I shall bring you back to what I know best. Located at Segambut Utara (Segambut North) is a little township sprawled with small/medium industrial lots. And amidst these workshops and factories, is Restoran Yu Ai … a very popular spot for their Seafood Noodle. This place is actually a stone throw away from Mont Kiara/Solaris if you’re familiar with that area.

Yu Ai is a simple food eatery that serves only what they do best which is seafood noodle and their new menu, fish head noodle if you fancy that. Having been in the business for more than 11 years, they family recipe of the much acclaimed seafood noodle has been a favorite for many.

When you step into the outlet, you’ll be greeted by rows of seafood noodle condiments displayed along the entrance, followed by gigantic pots of soup bases. Plain, Curry and Tom Yam. And those are exactly the choices of order you can make. Perhaps this might help :

Step 1 : Choose your preferred soup base. Plain, Curry or Tom Yam
Step 2 : Choose your noodle type. Mee, Meehoon or Kuay Teow
Step 3 : Finally choose your choice of seafood. There’s prawn, fish, oyster, cuttlefish and clam.
Step 4 : Determine the size you want depending on your appetite (try small if it’s your 1st time)

Here’s a little hint, if your spicy intake level is moderate, go for curry. And if you do choose tom yam, try not to speak too often when you’re eating. You never know when you might get choked over the strong, thick taste of the tom yam. I knew … speaking from experience…. if you know what I mean.

You can also mix and match the choices of seafood, for example I only go for fish and prawns since I don’t exactly fancy the rest.

The price in Yu Ai isn’t exactly the cheapest in town and in fact, it has been steadily increasing over the years. A large bowl of seafood noodle will set you back by RM17.00 while the small one cost RM15.00. Might be a little pricey for many but if the place is still pack during meal times, who’s complaining?

Budget aside, I don’t mind visiting them occasionally and I love bringing my friends visiting from abroad to this place.

As mentioned, some might think this place is expensive while some thing otherwise. Here’s what some others wrote about Yu Ai.

Ong Lai Restaurant has been around for ages! For the ‘uninformed’, Ong Lai is located along Jalan Raja Laut, right behind a little hotel called Bee Seng Hotel. And no, don’t ask me how many stars this hotel has. Don’t be ridiculous, alright. Anyway, as you can see, Ong Lai’s kitchen is located right in the open .. but if you frequent mamak stalls, this shouldn’t be any issue to you. Its owner uses the nickname, Ong Lai Goh. In Hokkien, ong lai means “good fortune comes”. In the early 1970s, the restaurant served ordinary fried Hokkien mee, fish head noodles and lor mee. His business took off after he added steamed fish head to the menu. Since then, the restaurant has been crowded with people from the KL-PJ area.

Their signature dish is Fish Head noodle but I can assure you … the rest are as good. In fact, I think the rest is better than their signature dish …. for example, I simply LOVE their Pineapple Chicken dish. Presented in a half pineapple, the chicken is coated with tomato sauce hence the sweet taste. You just simply can’t get enough of it.

Besides meat and vegetable dishes, there’s also the normal fried noodles such as the Hokkien Mee and Tang Hoon … among others. Anyway, let’s check out the visual to give you an idea of what to expect at Ong Lai.

Ong Lai is situated at the underground of Bee Seng Hotel, from Jalan Raja Laut, you have to walk downhill via a small road by the hotel and turn left into the alley.

Marco’s Pizza.

The restaurant is vibrantly surrounded by bright red walls, tables and of course … how can you miss the metallic red bar stools. With mirrors covering the walls of the restaurant … one might take a look from outside and thinks this is a huge place. But once you’re in there, you can’t shake off the feeling of a cozy family restaurant. Very much like the feeling you had when you visited Burger King for the first time. A little “fireplace” adds to the uniqueness of the place.

I am no fan of western food especially Pizzas and Spaghetti but Marco’s Pizza does churn out some pretty good choices.

The latest addition is the new Marco’s Pizza branch located in Bangsar New Village. Setups in this new outlet is pretty much the same as the one in Taman Bukit Emas, except for the level of service. On a personal note, I have visited both the outlets and I am happy to say that the level of service at the Bangsar New Village branch is commendable.

With 2 huge flat screen TV’s and a reasonably big children play area, this outlet is very ‘child friendly’. That means, you can enjoy your meal in peace. For those parents with young children, you will appreciate this.

Their specialty is of course pizza, hence the name. And I am sure you are interested to know which pizza is good. Well, depending on your preference … the menu is packed with a whole long list of pizza options. Here’s 3 that I had …..

The good stuffs are not limited to pizzas only … also check out their spaghetti … my favorite is the angel hair. Specifically … Angel Hair Gamberoni. Huge prawns …. basil … and napolitana sauce. Drooling yet?

Am I a vegetarian? Of course not! Do I take vegetarian cuisine? Hell yeah! After all vegetarian cuisines are all about food that meets vegetarian standards by excluding meat and animal tissue products. I can live with that ….

Yuet Sum Hin is located behind Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur. I’ve done a review some time ago on another food outlet close to this place … Pudu Keong Kei Herbal Soup Stall. Please see attached location map below for clearer directions to this place.

Well, I am not exactly an expert when it comes to ordering vegetarian cuisines and I must say, I am biased towards ordering dishes that is closely similar to meat dishes i.e. the ones you see below.

This Assam Fish dish doesn’t only look like the real Assam Fish but even taste just like one. That sets me thinking, if one chooses to be vegetarian for religious reasons, why then do they makes dishes to look like their meat counterpart? It’s like .. if the heart doesn’t want to go vegetarian, why force the mouth and tummy to? Haha … let’s not dwell too deep into this topic …. and get myself into trouble.

The Lotus Root with Cuttlefish. I have only one word for it. Crunchy. And healthy. Ok, it’s 2 words. Well, what can I say? It IS crunchy ….and it taste healthy. Hehe .. usually healthy food doesn’t really taste that good? Perhaps …

If you like fried mushrooms, you will like this one. It’s also a ‘crunchy’ dish … and the sweet and sour sauce makes the dish very appetizing.

Of course, how can you not have the ‘Vegetarian Burger’ of the day. From a herbivore’s perspective (that’s me!), this doesn’t look anything like a burger. Nor does it taste like one. But the menu says it is … and so does my friends who brought me there. I beg to differ ….. not.

Here’s the address and location map

With all this vegetarian discussions, I would like to bring forth your attention to this article I found on the internet, stressing the importance of going Vegan. We all know the benefits of it but I speak for myself when I say … how motivated are we? Perhaps this video might just say something….

Prince Hotel is strategically located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur along the picturesque Jalan Conlay and across the road and just two minutes’ walk away, is Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Parking is ample in the basement of the hotel and once you get onto the ground floor, Eccucino is just overlooking the lobby. As you walk into Eccucino, your eyes will not miss the dessert spread, ESPECIALLY the 4-tier chocolate fountain.

Seriously, it was tempting. I walked straight towards the Chocolate fountain … dipped a nice, juicy stick of strawberry into the chocolate fondue and popped it right into my mouth and I did this before even being seated. Thinking back, now I feel a little “paiseh” (embarrassed) …..

But that feeling quickly dissipated once I was seated. Armed with an empty stomach and a hue appetite, I announced to myself … Let The Games Began! My first stop … the open grill. Slipper Prawns, beef patties, chicken slices … I gathered them up, one at a time. Then I headed over to the chef, shot a smile and a nod and he knew what to do.

While I left him to do what he does best, I headed over to the ‘seafood’ area. I looked for an empty plate and spotted a small one. Not good enough … I spotted a bigger plate and quickly replaced it. I quickly reach out for those fresh and juicy looking prawns, shrimps … whatever you call it! At that moment, cholesterol seems like a foreign word.

Satisfied with what I have, my attention was diverted to the oysters. The royal produce of nature. I told myself, I’ll start with one. I sprinkled some Tabasco sauce on it. I took a lemon slice and headed back to my table. Halfway across, I turned back and loaded another 5 more…..

Yup, you’ll laugh now .. but wait until you’re in that condition, you’ll understand my predicaments. Back at my table, my grilled items sat there .. waiting to be savored. Good thing I had friends with me … else it looks like I am trying to transfer the whole buffet spread onto my table. I looked around, shot a stare at the lady next to me … smiled and dug in.

And … did I mention that Wednesday’s are “Grilled to Perfection” day in Eccucino? Well, the reason is simply clear. I’ve simply tasted one of the best grills in town. Not too dry, not too burnt. It’s just perfect. Given a choice, I would go for second helping. Then again, I need space for dessert, don’t I?

I would say this is a place that I will come back again, and again. Reasonable pricing, good ambiance, great food. Here’s the deal :

RM44.00++ per child (below 12 years old)

I sense this article will be a little different from what I usually write. Why?

Simply because I don’t know if I should write an article on the food quality of this place, or should I write about the setup taste of this place. Nevertheless, I will try my best to deliver my experience of Fun OK Cafe to you, like I always do.

With a name like that, you would’ve expected it to be a karaoke or something. But if I am not mistaken, it’s a direct translation from a cantonese word that meant … Return Home.

A friend told me about this place. A queer place. A place like home. However, I beg to differ. Firstly, my home does not look anything like that. Secondly, why would anyone want to visit a cafe that resembles his/her home? Wouldn’t they feel more like home in the comfort of their own home?

See.

I told you this article is going to be different. Now you’ll have to live through the rest of my babbles. Might as well .. since you’ve already started. Fun OK Cafe is no doubt a cute place to visit. You’ll not miss the bright green signage as you drive along the Connaught main road in Cheras. Located on the top floor, you’ll have to endure 3 flights of stairs to get up there. As you enter the cafe, you can help but noticing folks dressed in pajamas smiling and greeting you. You then realize they are actually the waiters in this ‘homely’ establishment.

The surprise doesn’t end there. Look around and you’ll spot washing machines, half-cut barrels, toilet seats decorated as dining tables and chairs. You’ll not find duplicate sets of dining tables as every single one of them is unique, in it’s own …. fancy ways. A black old refrigerator stands next to the entrance and when you opens it up, you’ll find boxes of toys instead of chilled drinks or food.

Ordering food in here is not easy task either. Menu comes in form of photo albums with great looking food photographs. Food choices are plentiful but limited to finger foods and light main courses.

Fried noodles, fried rice, western food …. basically a good mix of eastern and western. I decided to try a good variety so I choose to start with Seafood Tomyam Soup and proceeded with Chicken Chop and finally Colorful Fried Rice. The Seafood Tomyam Soup was pretty normal, not too spicy but quite sour. Tasted like it was prepared from stocks … tomyam stocks. Maggi maybe.

As for the Chicken Chop, nothing spectacular. Fries. Salad. And a slice of chicken meat with plenty of sauce. The Colorful Fried Rice. Sigh. I don’t even feel like mentioning it. Dry. Tasteless. Condiments …. almost non-existence.

Anyway, final verdict is ….

It’s a nice experience to have but I won’t repeat my visits. Then again, that’s just my thoughts. It’s just ideal spot for chatting, or just idling the afternoon away surfing the internet. Did I also mention FREE Wi-Fi ?

Here’s what I paid for my meals ….

Colorful Fried Rice – RM16.90 (A ridiculously priced item!)
Seafood Tomyam Soup – RM7.90
Chicken Chop – RM11.90
Ice Water – RM0.80 (After paying all that, my wallet left RM1.00 .. so had to drink ice water only)

Here’s where they are …..

72A, Jalan Cerdas,
Taman Connaught,
56100 Cheras Kuala Lumpur
Tel:03-91019915
Business hours: Sun~Thurs:12pm -12am Fri – Sat:12pm -2am

Pork and Wi-Fe free

Yet another Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood!

Well, that’s only true if you live around Mines Shopping Fair. Hailing from down south, the owner of Kinsahi established this chain of Japanese eatery in Johor and has expanded his business to the Klang Valley. Starting off at Jusco Bukit Tinggi Klang and now in Mines Shopping Fair, this is their 2nd outlet in the Klang Valley.

Well, I kinda stumbled upon this restaurant by accident and trust me, this is a one-in-a-million chance for me. Seriously, I mean ….when was the last time you visited Mines Shopping Fair?

Anyway, … what caught my eye was the restaurant’s decors. Tree branches growing on the outside of the restaurant and that’s something you don’t see everyday! That actually attracted me to check out their menu which was placed outside the restaurant, conveniently with 2 friendly and pretty waiting staff to welcome would-be patrons to the restaurant.

Once you get into the restaurant … dark and chic high back seats welcome you on one corner and on the other end … you can’t miss the bright red seats glaring at you. I’ll have to say their setup is pretty neat!

Anyway, while the setups and decoration might attract customers in … it’s the food and value that retains them. I had my fair share of some item off the menu and I could say they are pretty good. Waiting staff is pretty efficient, smiling always …. although the place was quite deserted.

I ordered 3 dishes …. Gintara Teriyaki Bento (it’s Grilled Cod Fish), Gintara Nabe (Cod Fish in HotPot) and finally Saba Shioyaki (Grilled Mackrel). The Grilled Cod Fish was pretty good, of course! It’s Cod fish … and the Teriyaki sauce was well prepared. However, I guess I wasn’t cut out for the Gintara Nabe. It’s Cod Fish in HotPot and vegetable. Plain … very plain. Unless you have a knack for plain tasting dishes … unfortunately, I am a man of spice !!! And finally, the Saba Shioyaki was a little dry, but goes well the the Teriyaki sauce from my Gintara Teriyaki Bento earlier.

As for value …. Kinsahi’s setup and decor definitely lived up to it’s value. For 3 dishes, I spent slightly over RM100. Quite standard if this outlet was located in a prime location i.e. The Curve, 1 Utama or even MidValley Megamall.

Unfortunately, it’s located at Mines Shopping Fair.

What a waste.

For those interested to check it out, Kinsahi is available in these venues

Yup, as if I haven’t done enough articles on Japanese restaurants. But this is something … really something.

Stacked in a far corner in Berjaya Times Square is Asahi Japanese Restaurant. If you know your way around Berjaya Times Square, Asahi is located right opposite Cold Storage supermarket … on the lower ground floor.

The setup in this restaurant is pretty chic … as seen above. Modern design with a touch of ancient japanese accessories. Waiting staffs are pretty friendly too, but of course what I like best is the menu is ‘user-friendly’ i.e. I don’t really have to read japanese to know how to order.

I started off with some decently prepared sushi, served on a cute “bridge”. Tobiko sushi or Flying Fish Roe is my new favourite sushi ! My previous favorite was Ebiko but trust me. Once you’ve tried Tobiko, you will never want to go back. Crunchiness. Nuff said. Then, there’s the Shake Maki or Raw Salmon sushi … nothing to shout about on this really.

Tobiko is the Japanese word for the flying fish roe used to create certain types of sushi. Tobiko is sometimes used as an ingredient in California rolls.

The eggs are small, ranging from 0.5mm – 0.8mm. For comparison, tobiko is larger than masago (capelin roe), but smaller than ikura (salmon roe). Plain tobiko has a red-orange color, a mild smoky/salty taste, and a crunchy texture. Sometimes tobiko is colored with wasabi (green), ginger (pale orange) or squid’s ink (black).

Anyway, I shall blabber no further. As usual … here are some ‘photographic experience’ to build your visual appetite.

Lastly, I should feel this is a good place to bring your date to …. just before catching a movie at the GSC cinema located conveniently a floor above Asahi…..

Although my article heading says herbal soup stall, you’ll be surprise what you will find at this place. Keong Kei is well known for the ‘interesting’ dishes they serve for dinner and if you crave for some really healthy herbal soup, then head for this place. Located somewhere behind Berjaya Times Square shopping center, you will have to known your roads to find this place.

Not many people are aware of the name of this place since the little signage they put up is in chinese characters. This place is more popularly known as “The Stall Under A Big Tree” since the stall IS located exactly under a huge aging tree. To give you a more detail picture, just head behind Berjaya Times Square and when you come to a junction just opposite Shaw Parade, you’re there. And just don’t expect a shop or restaurant because it’s pretty much like a shack, except when it’s dinner time …. it’s full of eager diners.

You can’t miss this place because the stalls are full with steamers and please do find an appropriate parking spot, traffic polices are always on the prowl in this area … yes, even at night. But if you really can’t find a good spot to park, it’s alright because the waiters at this stall will alert their patrons when the traffic polices arrive.

So what’s so special in Keong Kei ? Well, besides your common stuffs such as water monitor lizards, they also serve squirrels if you fancy furry crawlies, tortoises for nutritional benefits and flying foxes if you aspire to acquire batman-like attributes. No, I am not kidding you .. they DO serve these stuffs. But then again if you’re an amateur like me, let’s just settle for some milder stuffs such as Double-Boiled Chicken in Coconut or even the Curry Wild Boar.

And incidentally, these 2 are my favorite dishes in Keong Kei, among others. And they do compliment each other in a certain manner …. the Double-Boiled Chicken in Coconut is “Very qing (clear) and can tasted the natural sweetness of the herbs and coconut.” … according to BabeinthecityKL’s post on this dish. And you will also notice that the soup tends to stay warm for quite a while, probably because of the coconut shell. And if you like to finish every drop of the soup like me, then make sure you clear the contents in the coconut shell before slurping down the soup ….

Then there’s the Curry Wild Boar dish … I still remember when I first tried this dish, I ended up having a rumbling hot stomach all night. But that’s just me … took me a while to get use to it. This dish is ideally consumed during a cold rainy night. Perrfect ! I did some research on Wild Boar meat, some says you can’t overcook it or the meat might get a little too tough, while some say you can’t undercook it too, for a certain health reasons. Whichever way it is, Keong Kei must have the right formula because the Curry Wild Boar meat is just right, tender meat with strong curry taste to cover the smell of the wild boar meat.

And our final dish, Pork Belly with Preserved Mustard Cabbage (got this from BabeinthecityKL) or known in chinese as Mui Choy Khau Yoke. Oily, greasy and fattening. Perfect for me ! Healthy or not, this is another good one if pork belly is your game.

Anyway, my verdict on Keong Kei … An Experience You Wouldn’t Want to Miss. Every time a friend visits from overseas, I never fail to bring them to this place. Of course, refrain from ordering Squirrels for them unless they don’t mind !

Here’s the map to Keong Kei.
