Gosh I’ve been dreading to write this article. Over the last few months, I’ve been busy, busy and busy …. and yes … I’ve been overlooking my lost love. My interest in writing about food.

And to call myself a foodie. Am I? Sigh…..

Anyway, let’s just do this ……

So where do you find good food in Singapore? No pun intended but most people tell me you can’t find any good food in Singapore. I know that sounded biased but that’s how it is … especially if you don’t know Singapore well enough.

So to make things simple, I got myself some local guides … I meant some Singaporean friends who could actually tell me where to have good food. And this is where they brought me to ……

dsc_0175.JPG

Most people know what Geylang street is popular for, but I rest my case on that topic. Today, we shall talk about some really good food here.

Yong He Eating House is one of such. Yong He Eating House is located along Geylang Street, somewhere near Lorong 6 and 8. Like any other coffee shops in KL, Yong He does not brand any expensive setups, very simple layouts with rude customers and waiters.

dsc_0173.JPG

The good stuffs in Yong He includes their Yu Tiao (that’ll be Yau Ca Kwai in cantonese) … and mind you, Singaporean ones are particularly long … and I meant their Yu Tiao. Besides that, we also had their Toasted Bun Meat Floss with eggs … simple delicious, crispy to munch when served hot.

The salty Glutinous Rice is unique … feels like Yu Tiao wearing a glutinous jacket. Good to go with coffee if you don’t mind your coffee being oily. The Carrot Cake is special too, since it came packed with eggs. I find it rather … munchable and it really fills up your appetitie real quick. Finally came the Fried Meat Dumpling which I find rather bland. The dumpling skin is really thick … and meat is … too little.

I hope you enjoyed this round of food shots all the way from Singapore … and I’ll run by more shots of Food In Singapore soon, I hope.  And here’s a map to Geylang and Yong He … for your referral.

Kedai Makanan Yi Poh

Posted by Timothy Low under Uncategorized

I never really fancied Salt-Baked Chicken since I’m really not into herbal chickens and stuff but occasionally, a little indulgence can be rewarding.

dsc_0005.JPG

I recently came across a local TV food guide featuring Angel Wong Chui Ling … a local celebrity as the host. Her eating programme, One Day Five Meals, where she is given RM50 a day for five meals is currently on air on Astro Wah Lai Toi. Through Chui Ling’s show, I found some really great places for cheaper food haunts … !

One of such is Kedai Makanan Yi Poh … located in Damansara Utama. On the first look, Kedai Makanan Yi Poh resembles your local neighborhood coffee shop where you occasionally skips by to ‘tar-pau’ your favorite afternoon tea or black coffee.

dsc_0004.JPG

Set ups aside, this place serves a good round of delicious meals … and their specialty is a local favorite, Salt-Baked Chicken (Yim Guk Gai). Some said, the best Salt-Baked Chicken can be found in Ipoh, Perak … as mentioned by Kampungboycitygal.

Seriously, I am not a fan of Salted Baked Chicken … heck ! I am not a fan of salted anything … but in this case, I’ll make an exception. Especially when it comes highly recommended by Angel Wong …

Since this review was an impromptu case, I did not order much. A Szechuan Tan Tan Noodle … some Penang Sui Kow and of course, their specialty … the Salt-Baked Chicken. Service was good and order was taken fast and swift. Then again, I was their first customer that afternoon.

More customers drifted in before I had chance to ask the boss further questions relating to their salted baked chicken preparation method. Hence I could only produce some details on my liking of their food. Szechuan Tan Tan Noodle was the first to be served. Szechuan food tend to taste a little funny if you’re not ‘used’ to it. The Szechuan Tan Tan Noodle is a good example …. the taste, a little sweet for my liking … taste more like tomato soup. But I like the noodle though … you’ll love it if you like Wan Tan Noodle.

dsc_0007.JPG

Then came the Peking Sui Kow …. (Peking Water Dog !?!?!?!) … nah, just kidding. This snack dish is just crispilicious … if there is such a word. Get a piece … take the first crunchy bite and dip it into the sauce … and when the fillings were soaked with the sauce, stuff the whole thing in a mouthful .. yes, I am sure you can take it all in ! Now the taste will be complete. Yummy !

dsc_0016.JPG

And the grand finale …. the Salt-Baked Chicken …. that’ll be Yim Guk Gai in chinese. Seriously .. I’d give a thumbs up for this bad boy ! Too bad it’s only a half-bird …. felt like I could take more of it. The chicken meat is soooo ssssuculent and tasty … which only means the chicken was marinated well … and by wrapping it in paper and baked in hot salt in a covered wok, it keeps the taste within the chicken meat.

Back in my ex-workplace, we used to get 2 hours off for lunch on Fridays and since I worked in Cyberjaya … that was really a blessing i.e. there weren’t much interesting restaurants in Cyberjaya. Fridays were also the day we get adventurous … going out, hunting for a good meal. From Cyberjaya .. we’ve travelled to Kajang for Ice Kacang and Chi Cheong Fun … to USJ, Taipan for Italian food … Sungai Long for Pan Mee and for this round, we headed to Serdang for some nice hot Pig Intestine Pepper Soup ! AHEKO Hot Soup Restaurant is located next to South Sity Plaza in Serdang. Head towards South City Plaza, there are 2 rows of shop, right next to the Mall. AHEKO is right in the middle … if you drive along the shoplots .. you’ll never miss the big red signboard …..

11868876.jpg

Hot Soup is the specialty in this restaurant .. the Pig Intestine Pepper soup. Non-Asians might get a little turned off by the name of the soup, but trust me … try it and you might get hooked to it. It’s really good especially in cold weather … imagine sipping this hot pepperish spicy soup in a cold winter night. YUMMY ! (Not that I’ve tried that before .. I imagine a lot). Besides the soup, another speciality is the Wine and Black Sauce Spicy Chicken .. another delicacy ! As the name mentioned … the dish is a little spicy with a little wine taste ! A reminder though .. drink lot’s of fluid after this meal. In chinese … we would say .. this meal is a little “heaty” … if you know what I mean.

11868883.jpg

11868879.jpg

The price here is not at all expensive .. the soup is between RM8.00 to RM12.00 which serves from 4 to 8 person and averagely, the dishes are between those pricing. A meal for 10 would come up to around RM100 ++ which is reasonable, I would say.

For those adventurous diner, you might want to try making this dish on your own. Here’s the instruction. Good luck on the intestine though …..

Cafe 888 Kota Damansara

Posted by Timothy Low under Uncategorized

Gosh I think I am the very last one to write about Cafe 888.

And to think I organized this food tasting session. Well … serves me right for trying to balance between too many jobs and tasks. But nevertheless, I’ve finally sat myself down to write this one.

dsc_0188.JPG

Cafe 888 is located in Kota Damansara, very near to where I live and prior to this session … I ‘ve been to the cafe on a few different occasions. But nothing beats hanging out with a while bunch of foodies, chatting .. comparing notes. When I first saw Cafe 888, my first impressions were …. whoa … finally a cool looking cafe to hang out. And to my surprise, they’re equipped with Wi-Fi as well. And that .. my dear friends …. scored my votes ! Well … although a stone throw away is Old Town Coffee and they’re Wi-Fi ready as well, but ambiance-wise …. 888 just has it.

site.jpg

I don’t mean to sound biased but I like the settings in Cafe 888. White-walled with surrounding glass windows …with a touch of old coffee machines gives it a feel of old yet new. And believe it or not …. their tagline reads “Yesterday Once More” really suits them well. You get to choose to sit outdoor (cigarette smoke-conditioned) or indoor (air-conditioned) and you can even choose to sit on the floor. Well .. not exactly ON the floor … it’s an elevated area.

I was told that they serve Peranakan food … and while I am not of Peranakan origin nor am I a Baba … but Nyonya food, I had my fair share. Once a year, I get to dine at my auntie’s place … and she cooks up some REALLY, REALLY authentic and outrageously delicious Nyonya food ! Burnt tongue and swollen lips included in the meal for this one …..

dsc_0203.JPG

dsc_0218.JPG

dsc_0211.JPG

As for 888, we experienced some really good stuff too. Let me recall what we had the other day …. starting with the appetizers. Let me see … we had Inchi Kabin or otherwise known as Peranakan Fried Chicken, Otak-Otak and Shrimp Toasties. And my vote goes to Otak-Otak. Frankly speaking, Inchi Kabin is a little too dry for my taste but having said that … the spices in it greatly enhances it’s taste. Shrimp Toasties is a nice snack, but it doesn’t bring out the specialty of it. But the Otak-Otak is something to shout about. Again, Otak-Otak is pretty common and widely available everywhere therefore to prepare a good Otak-Otak dish takes skills … loads of them. Otak-otak is commonly made by mixing fish paste (usually mackerel) with a mixture of spices including chillies, garlic, shallots, turmeric, lemon grass and coconut milk. The mixture is then wrapped in a banana leaf that has been softened by steaming, then grilled or steamed. What Cafe 888 did was using seafood instead of fish paste. And the result …? Deliciously, mouth-watering spicy Otak-Otak that leaves you wanting more …..

dsc_0247.JPG

Then comes the main dishes … mainly Char Kuey Teow. Now this is also one of the most “commonest” (if there is such a word) dish you can get. Well … being common also means it’s the hardest dish to please people with. I mean … everyone serves them …. Penang Village, Little Penang … you name it. So how then, do you serve up a good Char Kuey Teow dish ?

I quote a portion from www.malaysianfoodreview.net that says …

“Eating the Char Kuey Teow makes me get the feeling that the cook is really passionate about his work as he sweats it all out to make sure that every plate of his Char Kuey Teow tasted like his best plate, like an artist at work I would put him in the same class as Da Vinci, Beethoven, Zinedine Zidane and Borat”.

Anyway, if you would like to read a little more about good CKT … go here.

Things Asian
Loopy Meals

From CKT, we move on to one of Malaysian’s most required staple diet, RICE. Not just any rice though … we were presented with not one but 3 different rice dishes. Nasi Lemak … a breakfast favourite (all-day meal to some individuals), Nyonya Plate and finally the Peranakan Plate. Of the 3 dishes, you see a little similarity in all 3, especially the Nyonya and the Peranakan Plate. As for the Nasi Lemak … it’s quite a luxury to have a while fish, anchovies …. kacang (peanuts) is a must have … and the sambal is just GRRRREAT !

dsc_0229.JPG

dsc_0305.JPG

And this … as agreed by the rest of the team .. is the STAR of the night. Nyonya Curry Laksa .. that’s what it’s called. And I called it … “Simply The Best” Curry Laksa I’ve had to-date. I am not planning to elaborate further on it but just leaving you with a thought … that … you MUST try it.

dsc_0233.JPG

From oriental, let move West. This simple dish … the Spaghetti Bolognaise can be prepared simply from the comfort of your own home … just like instant noodle but the trick is the sauce. Bolognese sauce (ragù alla bolognese in Italian, also known by its French name sauce bolognaise) is a meat based sauce for pasta originating in Bologna, Italy. Bolognese sauce is sometimes taken to be a tomato sauce but authentic recipes have only a very small amount of tomato, perhaps a couple of tablespoons of tomato paste.

Here’s a video presentation from VideoJug on “How To Make Spaghetti Bolognaise” but nothing beats having it made by a professional (Did I fail to mention that the chefs in Cafe 888 were previously from La Bodega?).

RedGinger @ Northpoint

Posted by Timothy Low under Uncategorized

Hi …. back again with another new article for another new makan place !

Not many of my friends know where NorthPoint MidValley is located … although I did specifically mention the word “MidValley”. Situated at the north entrance to Mid Valley City, Northpoint comprises two towers of suites and residences. Expanding on the SOHO concept ( small office home office ), Northpoint offers a city lifestyle where you can combine home and office in a single building. Cool or what !

northpoint.jpg

Now that you know where NorthPoint is …. let’s move on to the next topic. There are 4 restaurants in Northpoint, namely RedGinger, Isthmus, Ninja Jones and finally Izzi’s (did I get that spelt correctly?). I plan to write about them … yeap, all 4 of ‘em and I shall begin with RedGinger.

Located just next to the pedestrian bridge that bridges from MidValley to Nortpoint, RedGinger is pretty strategically located … because once you walk over from MidValley to Northpoint, there is no way you can miss the restaurant.

As you walk in to the restaurant, you can’t miss the beautifully crafted logo of RedGinger at the entrance … and the decor is an interesting blend of contemporary light fixtures, and old chinas, a huge counter bar, and touches of flowers to soften the environment. Yellow lights soften the ambiance.

place.JPG

We started our dinner with some starters … common street food but exclusively prepared. That’s also because except for the Chicken Lobak, the rest of them food looks different from the ones you get outside. The “Yau Char Kwai” for example … are delicious thin crispy strips dressed with mayonnaise … instead the the “double-barrel” rolls of flour … and the Otak-Otak comes in packets.

Huge packets ! I think the Otak-Otak alone could satisfy my dinner pang. But of course, with 20+ people sharing the food … it’s just nice.

chicken-lobak.JPG

yau-char-kwai.JPG

otak-otak.JPG

Then comes the main courses … you should’ve seen how we paraded the food ! The dishes were treated like models in studio shoots minus the stage lightings though…

I manage to take some shots but not all …. gosh, it’s difficult to have a good balance to ..

  • Enjoying the sight of the food
  • Taking photographs of the food
  • Eating the food
  • And actually enjoying the food

But like I said, a man’s got to do what a man’s got to do. I went on shooting away, missing some of the dishes along the way though. Well, here are the dishes that I did enjoy … the Ipoh Hor Fun, the special Kam Heong Kuay Teow, Dry Curry Sang Har Noodle and also the Fried Rice. And my favourite …. the Ipoh Hor Fun is the best.

I’ll let the photos do the talking here.

And here are some dishes that are equally mouth-watering … the Black Pepper Beef and Steamed Chicken with Wine and Salt. Again .. I will not elaborate further on the description of the dishes but … let’s just say it’s a must-try for all !

Eric Deli Paradise

Posted by Timothy Low under Uncategorized

The name ‘Eric’ mentioned in Eric Deli Paradise refers to the Hong Kong celebrity Eric Tsang, famous for his popular SuperTrio game show … if you really must know. Eric Tsang does not own Eric Deli Paradise but rather, using his image to promote the restaurant by pasting his posters all over this red and white themed restaurant and basically, it does the marketing gimmick job quite well. Well … at least to me, it does….

11458673.jpg

Eric Deli Paradise is located on the ground floor of Hartamas Shopping Centre covering a huge chunk of the right wing … from unit G11B – G15 to be exact, right next to the entrance of the parking lot. Just check out the map provided above. The place is huge therefore not a problem to find a table. I guess the restaurant could easily fit 350 people or so … with private function rooms too.

Anyway, since I was there to try out the ‘tim sum’ … I didn’t had the chance to review their popular Sze Chuan dishes (noted in my next to do list). The ordering style is exactly like what you get in some other popular Hong Kong based restaurants and cafe .. a paper menu with pencil for you to start ticking away. Call me old-fashioned but I still don’t feel comfortable ordering stuffs that I can’t visualize. Not having much of a choice, I made some choices and ‘submitted’ my orders to the ever-smiling service personnels dressed in all-red.

11460094.jpg

A glance-through on the dining customers … next to our table, a couple – rather rich looking (using expensive sunglasses as hair bands) with a screaming baby, sigh! Looking the other way, an old couple … quietly enjoying their lunch ..probably felt irritated at my staring .. also rich looking. Seriously, I should review my observations. I am probably biased … everyone looks rich here! Then again, it’s just because I am in Hartamas area.

ANYWAY … this is what I’ve ordered …. with a couple of other stuffs and the total bill for 2 person came up to about RM64.00. Quite a hefty amount … I would say. Painful to my deep pockets. Wished this was a sponsored review ….

Ka-Soh Seafood Restaurant

Posted by Timothy Low under Uncategorized

11082184.jpg

KA-SOH (sister-in-law in Cantonese) owes its name to the belief that this person in the Chinese patriarchy is usually filled by someone quite dedicated, diligent and hardworking.

Ka-Soh Seafood Restaurant is situated in a car park opposite the Ritz Carlton entrance and behind The Westin. Ka Soh sounds so ordinary but rumor has it that there has been loads of Chinese celebrities from abroad and local who’ve sat and ate here. Proof comes in the form of celebrity photographs on their notice board as a testament to their visit.

11378260.jpg

Ka-Soh is famous for their Fishhead Noodles, Kah-Soh curry fish head and the special Prawn Paste Fried Chicken.

Other specialities are :

Ka-Soh sang yee (toman) fish head and fillet noodles

Kah-Soh braised sang yee (toman) head with black bean sauce

Chinatown Singapore

Posted by Timothy Low under Uncategorized

chinatown.jpg

Singapore’s Chinatown evolved around 1821 when the first Chinese junk arrived from Xiamen, Fujian province in China. The passengers, all men, set up home around the south of the Singapore River which is known today as Telok Ayer. Chinatown’s local name – Niu Che Shui (Bullock Cart Water) arose from the fact each household at that time had to collect fresh water from the wells in Ann Siang Hill and Spring Street, using bullock-drawn carts.

Located at Smith Street, the Chinatown Food Street offers the best local hawker favourites! You would be able to savour the best of Singapore’s hawker food and rediscover the joys of al-fresco roadside dinning among the beautifully restoring shophouses of Chinatown.

The Chinatown Food Street offers over 20 types of local delights. Do try out local dishes like Char Kway Teow ( a noodle dish fried with fresh cockles), Carrot Cake (a steamed savoury radish cake fried with eggs and preserved vegetables) or Rojak (a refreshing local salad tossed with sweet sauced and peanuts), served from outdoor stalls like days of the old. Expect to pay an average of SGD 5 per person for a hearty meal.

dsc_0917.JPG

When Sir Stamford Raffles allocated the area south of the Singapore River to the Chinese community in his 1828 Town Plan, swarms of immigrants from southern China came to reside in these old shop houses, eventually establishing what we now call Chinatown.

dsc_0923.JPG

Up till today, a large part of Chinatown is still based on the layout of the 1828 Raffles Town Plan with most of the street names remaining unchanged. For many of the older Chinese, they still affectionately refer to some streets by their old nicknames, which were usually derived from the trades carried out there or the names of famous landmarks and personalities associated with that area.

dsc_0929.JPG

As the shophouses then were small and cramped, the streets became the common area for most families. Responding to this need, street side stalls in Chinatown often served dual purposes. Products sold during the day (vegetables, meat and fish) usually differed from those sold at night (clothes and daily necessities).

dsc_0916.JPG

Food and drink hawkers, peddlers, fortune-tellers, travelling medicine salesmen, storytellers, buskers and opera singers all contributed to the bustle of life and noise, an atmosphere we know you’ll enjoy as we revive lost traditions and forgotten practies in Chinatown.

Wong Ah Wah Grilled Chicken Wings

Posted by Timothy Low under Uncategorized

This is the 2nd time I am writing this article …. and guess what? I have to write it from the scratch … (banging my head for no-backups).

But …. a man’s got to do what a man’s got to do .. right? So here I am again … figuring out what to write about this place. If memory serves me right, I wrote great stuffs about this place. Then again, I don’t really need to write good things about them … I mean, this is Wong Ah Wah we’re talking about. Drive along Jalan Alor …. and Wong Ah Wah or W.A.W for short is the last shop on that street. You can never miss it …

Just how popular is this W.A.W ? Well .. just look at the amount of articles I found on the internet ….

Journeymalaysia.com calls them “The Best Grilled Chicken Wing in town” … while here are reviews from some of our fellow foodies in town.

WMW
A Whiff of Lemongrass
Rasa Malaysia
The Yat (One) and Only Journey
backStreetGluttons
Precious Pea
Chicks And Pea

Well, if that many people has written about W.A.W, why bother ? Hey .. one’s got to make a statement and I am making one here too ! And my point is ….. ?

Dudes … just take a look at this photo below. Yes … the photo of the wings. The shiny … golden … grilled chicken wing. Don’t you wish you could just reach out and grab a piece of it? Yeah … tell me you do. This … my dear friend, is the hottest selling piece of grilled chicken wing you can find in town.

Alright, it isn’t. I was just kidding.

You can’t deny it is one of the better ones around this area. I mean, there are probably others … hidden in corners of Cheras or some backyard of Puchong but, you’ll have to ‘enlighten’ me on those.

dsc_0070.JPG

This one, my friend … is good. The first time I had it, I merely liked it. The noodles were a little tasteless .. although the BBQ pork was …. deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeliciously satisfying ! The second round though … I was thoroughly done. Done … because I had so many servings of it that the rest of those dining with me are practically preventing me from helping myself with another one. And the keyword here is … SWEET. It’s the sweetness that kept me going.

dsc_0103.JPG

This …. my dear friends … is a classic dish to some, exotic to others … especially first timers. I called ‘em the oriental escargot … good stuff, I would say. I shall not indulge further into the specifics … one shall not get to know the stuff one is about to consume.

Anyway … can I see a show of hands, how many of you know how to eat balitong or more generally known as “chut-chut” (derived from the sound you make when you suck out the fellow from it’s shell). No ? No worries … there’s no right or wrong here … only the eventual result i.e. to get the stuff out of it’s shell … anyway, here’s my way…

Step 1. You probably want to select a decent, nice looking one.

Step 2. Lick or better still … suck the sauce off (you don’t want to swallow a “cili padi” by accident)

Step 3. Go for the end with a large opening, stuff your tongue in … just the tip of your tongue (not french kiss eh …) and suck hard while pulling your tongue out at the same time.

Step 4. It you fail at Step 3, turn to the back of the balitong which has a little opening and suck a little. Then return to Step 3 and try again.

Step 5. Once you get it out, dip it in the sauce and savor.

There are you .. my 5 steps to a successful dish of balitong.

dsc_0086.JPG

And if I have already successfully build up your appetite (or not!) … here’s the map to go to W.A.W. Have a good meal !
